A Vision for Nevada, a Vision for America
The Nevada State Legislature is the people’s branch of government. A counter-balance to the state executive office and judicial offices—as our founding fathers intended.
We encourage consumer protection: let us make sure that rate hikes granted by the public utility commission—a regulatory agency of the executive branch—to our utility companies are reasonable.
Small business is the last stronghold for the continued economic viability of Nevada and America. Gaming and tourism are important assets to Nevada; of greater importance is that we have more square footage of convention space than any other major city in America. Small businesses are a tremendous support structure for the triad of tourism, gaming and convention space. Let us not tax small business out of business by exorbitant payroll taxes; or make the cost of their utilities prohibitive to continued growth of their business—by unreasonable utility costs or fuel costs; or make the cost of maintaining health insurance for their employees insurmountable.
Competent urban planning is the core of a vital city. Let us consider improved ways to crisscross this valley, by encouraging the state, county, and city transportation departments to introduce one-way streets and timed travel lanes. We encourage an increased fee structure for traffic violations, as a way to curtail the accidents on our roads, and the potential injuries to our citizens that result.
We believe that success in school—public or private—begins in the home; that if our public school system is considered to be failing, notwithstanding, there are students that are very successful in it; we need to ask them and their families why. For those that are not as successful in the public school system, we encourage competition: vouchers, charter schools, and alternative forms of learning such as home schooling.
We propose synchrony in higher levels of education: transferable credits between community colleges, state colleges, and universities; similar to California, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas. We encourage vocational and trade schools, similar to the nations of Europe; where adolescents and adults obtain transferable and viable skills for making a living—for life.
We recognize that there is a tremendous deficit in students entering graduate school, in professions that contribute to research and development; vital for the viability of any state or nation.
With regards to the balance of power at the state level—as we are a nation of laws—we believe in the inherent right of the state legislature (the peoples branch of government and their representatives) to make laws to be honored by the executive branch—without over reliance on regulatory commissions—and the judicial branch—avoiding legislation from the bench.
We believe that state governments, unlike private businesses have a golden parachute—they cannot fail; if they are not efficient they do not go out of business, passing the liability to succeeding generations.
The state of Nevada should take the lead in advancing alternative forms of energy, by utilizing the mandate that utility companies have to make a portion of their energy services as alternative forces of fuel; especially as regards supplying power to all state buildings.
We recognize that that there are new accounting laws that mandate that states explicitly state their liabilities, particularly when it concerns providing benefits for retired state employees; and that this mandate avoids the obfuscation provided by discussion of tax and spending initiatives—for or against.
That whether Nevada has a surplus budget—or not—that America is experiencing a trade deficit, and that it is up to each state to help correct; by taking in consideration all the aforementioned.
Finally, that we are eternal optimists; that Nevada and America are prosperous and deserve to be so; and will apply discipline, determination, and due diligence for maintaining and increasing our influence, locally, state wide, nationally, and in the world.
Freedom is not a free-for-all; it is a discipline.
